If your work station is looking a little lackluster these days, then this trio of color-packed, ultra-easy desktop DIY ideas is for you. Just block off your next lunch break, make a run to the drugstore for your four supplies – nail polish, acrylic paint, paint brushes, and a Sharpie – and we’ll show you how to brighten your cube in 30 minutes flat.

DIY Colorblocked Thumbtacks

Thumbtacks are a workplace staple, but often come in an uninspiring array of dull colors. To reinvent the garish, traffic light-green tacks on my bulletin board, I gave them a pretty, pastel makeover using nail polish and paint. (Nail polish works best on these flat, metal tacks, but I also used paint so I could mix custom colors.) To start, stick your tacks into an even surface, such as a discarded magazine or shoebox cover, so their heads are facing up. Paint over each tack, using 2-3 coats of each color, and then finish each tack off with a layer of clear topcoat.

Jazz up humdrum items in your pen holders with a little paint and a little Sharpie love. All you’ll need here? Acrylic paint and a metallic Sharpie.

DIY Colorblocked Planter

Like many of my coworkers, I keep a plant at my desk to liven things up. Inspired by all the color-blocked decor on Pinterest, I couldn’t resist dipping my cactus planter in cheery pink, and painting a ModCloth blue racing stripe down the center!

How have you dressed up your work spaces? We’d love to know!
