Who doesn’t love to wave a flag around? They’re reminiscent of celebrations and happiness. Just try waving one without a smile on your face.
I give you a Hooray Flag DIY, complete with downloadable templates and a discount at my favourite stamp shop Blossom Stamps (see bottom for details).
Now I must tell you, Martina of Blossom Stamps is incredible. She is super helpful and responded to e-mails quickly which, when you’re a busy bride like me, is essential. I e-mailed her our designs and thoughts and she created these beautiful stamps that we have used all over our wedding. A hint to all you newly engaged folks, get a custom address stamp. They save so much time and look oh so pretty.
To make this DIY possible on a grand scale (i.e. if you can’t handle writing “Hooray” in sharpie over and over) you can save the image below and send it to Martina to get your stamp made.
The same sized stamp (6 1/2″ long by 1 5/8″ tall) is $21 plus shipping, but she can also alter it to be smaller or larger if needed. And I can tell you first hand how fantastic this stamp is and how often I’ve used it! It also went on the back of our envelopes and I plan to use it loads in the future.
Here’s everything else you’ll need and a tutorial on how to make your own hooray flag:
– Fabric. I used 2 packages (6 yards) of this muslin cotton to create 130 flags. So approximately 3 yards per 65 flags.
– Dowel sticks
– Hooray stamp
– Flag Stencil
– Ink pads
– Glue gun
– Scissors
– Pencil
Step #1: Print the stencil onto card stock and cut out. Trace out the flags on your fabric. To save fabric, place stencil beside each other each time you trace. See below image for reference:
Step #2: Cut out all your flags using sharp fabric scissors (the sharper the easier). Iron each flag flat.
Step #3: Leaving about a 1 inch 3/4 margin from the flat end of the flag, stamp your hooray stamp on the flag, making sure your margins are even on top and bottom
Step #4: On the unstamped side, lay your dowel an inch from the flat side with about a centimetre of the dowel sticking out the top. Hot glue the dowel stick onto the fabric, then run a line of hot glue along the left side of the dowel stick. Fold the fabric over to cover the dowel and press onto the hot glue. Add more glue if necessary.
Step #5: Wave your flag with a smile!
If you’re making a big batch of these (like I was) I suggest getting together a bunch of girls with appies and glue guns in hand. Let the fun begin.
