December 25th is coming up quick! You’ve been so busy dashing here and there to find the perfect gifts for everyone on your list, but it will soon be time to sit back with the family and enjoy the cozy comforts of your well-dressed holiday home.
We’ve got just the project you need to add some last minute cheer! This project is quick and easy. It’s perfect for beginners and a great way to get the kids involved. You can use these little trees as ornaments, strung as a garland, placed on a gift, or even just left stacked up for a darling little centerpiece on your kitchen table.
We hope you enjoy making these little trees as much as we did!
Materials
- Printable template (download here)
- At least two 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheets of felt (or multiple colors of your choice)
- Yarn, string, or twine
- Sewing machine
- Large plastic darning needle
- Embroidery floss and hand sewing needles (optional)
Step 1
Print the template and cut out your felt shapes using the template provided. You should have six pieces total. If you want to do any embellishments on any of your layers, whether fancy machine stitches or by hand, complete this step before you sew up your side seams.
Step 2
With right sides together and wrong side facing you, sew up the side seams at 1/4-inch for the largest piece and 1/8-inch for the other five pieces. Flip each piece back to right sides out then stack them up from largest to smallest.
Step 3
Using a large plastic darning needle, thread the 20-inch yarn, string, or twine of your choice. I chose to layer four pieces of thin yarn. Starting from the underneath side of the bottom of the tree, thread the string up through each layer and out the top of the tree.
Step 4
Now pull one end of the yarn all the way up through the top the tree, making sure to leave a little tail through the bottom of the tree. Take your thread and darning needle back down through each layer, leaving a generous loop at the top of the tree. Tie a knot in your string at the top of the tree as shown.
Step 5
Flip your tree over and tie the string underneath in a double-knot, getting as close as you can to the hole in the bottom layer.
Happy crafting!
