I’m checking off another item on my kitchen makeover list! Yay!! So far I’ve finished a big, rustic chalkboard, some adorable mason jar soap dispensers, two distressed signs (here and here), and a little plate wall display. It’s looking so much better already with all these little vintage touches!
After being distracted by my spontaneous patio makeover last week, I decided it was time to get some artwork on this big blank wall next to my pantry. The space is very narrow as it is, and with a sink on one side it’s a pretty tight space to walk through. So when I told my husband I was going to add some artwork, he cringed at the thought of getting yelled at every time he knocked something off the wall with his big shoulders. Like I would ever yell! {wink} I may only be 5’2″, but I’m pretty feisty when it comes to my hard-earned DIY decor!
So I brainstormed and decided to add some artwork along the top of the wall, so it would be out of the way for my linebacker-shouldered boys. In case you haven’t noticed from my recipe posts lately, I’ve fallen pretty head-over-heels in love with food photography, and I’m obsessed with creating beautiful images of one of my favorite things in life: FOOD! So I decided to snap some shots of a few things I picked up from the grocery store. I went with foods that had great shapes, textures, and color that I knew would photograph really well. I also kept the food styling very simple to really showcase the foods. Here is the set-up I used to take these photos:
A cardboard table next to a window, a few old barn boards, a white foam board propped up to bounce the light, and some yummy fruits and veggies… Here are the shots I came up with!

Didn’t they turn out gorgeous?? I always feel like I still have so much to learn about blogging and photography, but then I look back on the progress I’ve made over the past year, and I’m so proud of how far I’ve come! These were the perfect photos to showcase next to my pantry to inspire some delicious cooking and hopefully inspire some healthy eating too! Photographing brownies, cake, and ice cream wouldn’t have exactly been good for my diet! I uploaded the images to Walgreens photo center and printed 8 x 10’s for $3.99 each.
Now onto the photo clipboards! This idea came from being too cheap to buy photo frames. I know, that’s pretty sad, but I couldn’t find any I liked for under $12 each, so I needed to figure out a cheaper way to display my pretty photos. I first picked up a 6 foot 1 x 12 inch board from Menards for $9.29 and cut it into four 13 inch pieces with my chop saw.
After I wiped off all the dust really well, I applied a dark walnut stain to the boards. I let the stain sit for about 15 minutes and wiped away any stain that hadn’t soaked into the wood.
Again, I didn’t want the boards to look brand new, so went over them again with my hand sander to remove some of the stain, focusing on the corners and edges. After cleaning off the dust, I used Minwax Paste Finishing Wax to seal the boards.
I hammered a sawtooth hanger onto the back of each board and flipped it over to add the photo clips. I found these little antiqued silver clips at Hobby Lobby next to the scrapbook embellishments for $5.99 and on sale for 50% off.
I attached two clips onto one of the photos and laid it centered on the board. Using a fine-tip Sharpie, I made a small mark where the clips should go. I couldn’t get a nail through the hole in the clips because of the angle, so I decided to just glue them to the board. I removed the photo from the clips and used a small dab of super glue to attach them.
Then after the glue was dry, I hung them up in my pantry! The best part about these photo clipboards is if someone does happen to knock one off the wall, there will be minimal damage to them… a glass photo frame would not be so lucky! I think my husband was very proud that I actually listened to his advice! And the next best thing about these photo boards… They only cost me $3.07 each! $7.06 if you add the price of printing the photos! And I can easily switch the photos out whenever the mood strikes… which is pretty often : )
And here they are with the food photos added! I originally planned to make the photos black and white, but the color of the foods were so vibrant and gorgeous against the neutral background, I just had to leave them natural! Which photo is your favorite? I can’t decide between the beautiful color of the cherries, the shape of the pears, or the texture of the blackberries! And those little peas and so cute too! Okay, they are all my favorites!
