Whether you are looking for a quick splash of color for your next party or coordinating the perfect pattern into your wedding, a simple favor bag is the answer. Find your favorite fabric online, at your local yardage shop or make your own on Spoonflower, and easily customize this simple bag. No real sewing skills needed, just the ability to sew a straight line, two straight lines to be exact. Once you master these simple steps, you can make just a few for your next bridal shower or a bunch for your wedding. You can even use this tutorial to create fabric bags for gift giving, all you will need to do is adjust the measurements for the size bag you need.
You will need…
fabric
pinking shears
sewing machine
twill tape, twine or ribbon
Step 1: Wash and iron your fabric. This removes the sizing (what makes the fabric stiff) and ironing will remove any wrinkles.
Step 2: Cut out strips of fabric 5″ x 18″. I folded my fabric in half and cut 5″ x 9″. Adjust your sizes here to make larger or smaller bags. Also, if you use a rotary cutter and mat, you can cut large batches faster.
Step 3: Lay your strip of fabric out flat and fold in half, forming the 5″ x 9″ size, with right sides facing each other. You will see the wrong side, essentially your bag is inside out right now.
Step 4: Sew two straight lines with the sewing machine down both sides, from the top through the folded edge, about 1/2″ in from each side.
Step 5: Trim excess thread and turn right side out.
Step 6: Cut the top off with the pinking shears. This evens out the top and ensures each bag is the same size.
Step 7: Fill with treasures or presents or candy and tie with twill tape or ribbon.
If you only have a few to make, you could bypass the sewing machine and stitch by hand. Fabric favor bags are easy to make and once you do, you will want to make them for every party. I always keep a few on hand for wrapping quick thank you gifts.
